Baton Rouge PD released bodycam footage of a shooting at an off campus apartment complex near LSU

According to police, the shooting happened just after 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Officers were originally called to the scene for a public assistance situation involving an emotionally disturbed person, authorities said.

A spokesperson with the Baton Rouge Police Department said officers arrived at the scene and heard gunshots being fired. The spokesperson said a 25-year-old suspect pointed his handgun at police despite verbal commands from officers. The officers then fired at the suspect and struck him in the upper body area, according to the spokesperson.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, according to authorities. They added one officer suffered a minor injury during the incident.

Malik Chavis, 25, was taken to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on two counts of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, illegal use of a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Police said the shooting happened four days earlier at The Hub apartment complex on Highland Road and Lee Drive.

They added the suspect was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, and one officer suffered a minor injury during the incident.
