This is a period in American history rarely discussed but we're going to talk about how the institution of slavery evolved in the 270-plus years before the Declaration of Independence. How the colonies started as “societies with slaves” or a socioeconomic order in which slaves were a small minority of the population in which slavery was only one of several systems of Labor, and how these colonies evolved into “slave societies” in which slavery was the principal form of Labor and slaves constituted a substantial portion of the population.

Historical U.S.A. is a bi-weekly podcast hosted by Historian Lisa Weakland.
