Matthew 3:3-6

The herald of the Messiah King appears to Israel in exactly the opposite way that they would have expected a king's herald to appear. He is baptizing the general public, a practice normally reserved for those who have become ritualistically unclean or those converting to Judaism. And prior to baptism the people are publicly confessing their sins.
