Date – Tuesday, June 20th - 2023 – Pope St. Silverius

Pope St. Silverius, celebrated on June 20th, was a valiant defender of the Catholic faith during a time of great adversity. Despite facing mistreatment and persecution at the hands of heretics led by Empress Theodora and General Belisarius, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the truth.

Theodora, desiring approval for her chosen bishop with heretical views, sought Rome's endorsement. However, Pope Agapitus, Silverius' predecessor, deposed the bishop and condemned his followers. When Silverius was elected as Pope after Agapitus' death, Theodora persisted in her efforts, but her requests were met with consistent opposition.

In 536, General Belisarius was dispatched to Rome on Theodora's behalf. Instead of attacking the city and the Gothic invaders, he resorted to spreading false rumors about the Pope, accusing him of treason. Despite the mounting pressure, Pope Silverius refused to yield to the Empress' demands. Seeking refuge in the Church of St. Sabina, he held his ground. However, he was deceived by deceitful ambassadors who promised him a safe return to the papal palace.

Tragically, in March 537, Pope Silverius was kidnapped and exiled to the Island of Ponza. The harsh treatment he endured during his captivity led to his death in June 539.

This account underscores the challenging battles fought by the Pontiffs against heresy and the unjust actions perpetrated against them. Theodora's persistent attempts to impose heretical figures in Constantinople revealed her lack of faith and disregard for truth. General Belisarius and his officers resorted to lies and the kidnapping of the Pope due to their inability to use force against him.

Heresy, being a denial of the truth, is a particularly malicious sin.

When engaging with heretics, it is crucial to present the Church's facets that reflect her truth and sanctity. Demonstrating the Church's wisdom, divinity, and maternal goodness can have a profound impact. Seeking common ground and adopting an ecumenical approach is insufficient for conversion. Instead, it is necessary to illuminate the aspects that heretics are missing.

However, if a heretic persists in rejecting the Catholic Church, it becomes necessary to publicly confront and refute their errors to prevent their spread. This does not negate the teachings of Our Lord but serves as a defense against evil and its influence. The Church's militant nature requires a steadfast and courageous response.

Pope St. Silverius' life serves as a reminder of the ongoing enmity between heretics and the Catholic Church, as prophesied in Scripture. In emulation of his example, let us remain vigilant in defending the Catholic faith against the forces of heresy, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Pope St. Silverius, pray for us!
