Oak Hill Church of Christ 6-18-23 Message: "Deadbeat Dad"

Many times, we find ourselves tempted to believe that our possessions or our professional accolades are what cement our status and display our legacy.

God thinks differently. To God, our legacy is the family that we raise, and shepherd into the next generation. King David was a courageous warrior and a capable statesman. He was even an example of a man who lived a faith life approved of by God. Unfortunately, he was not the best parent.

While David's focus was often on combat and statecraft, his personal life languished. As a result, David faced difficulty at the end of his life, including a coup by one of his own sons.

During our lives, our desire to focus our efforts externally, whether for personal glory or the belief that in doing so we are helping to provide for our family may be a deceptive mistake. A man's primary duty should be to guide and protect his family and to see to their needs, not only physical but emotional as well.
