The Largest Deal in Aviation History
Indigo is an Indian low-cost airline. It is the largest airline in India in terms of both passengers carried and fleet size. It has close to 60% of the domestic market share in India. Last year, the airline had $3.3 billion in revenues and 101 destinations.
Indigo agreed to buy 500 Airbus jets which makes this the largest commercial jet deal in civil-aviation history. The order is worth $50 billion before customer discounts. This will more than double the airline’s fleet of 300 aircraft. The planes are scheduled to be delivered between 2030 and 2035.
I am bullish and optimistic regarding India. It has a growing population, and I think the GDP per capita could rise a lot. I think travel is something that makes you a more well-rounded person. As people have more disposable income, they are going to want to travel, first domestically within their own country, and then internationally and overseas.
However, the airline industry is cutthroat with thin margins and little room for error. I do not like airline companies. I think Airbus and Boeing is a better play than an actual airline operator.
