Scholz said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Berlin that the main topic of the meeting was the preparation for the NATO Summit in Vilnius.
Explaining that the summit will be a meeting where Russia's war against Ukraine and how to deal with its consequences will be discussed in depth, Scholz said, "The war may last longer. We should be prepared accordingly."
Reminding that they agreed on a series of steps to strengthen the Alliance once again at the summit in Madrid a year ago, Scholz said, "NATO is a defence alliance. Germany has done a lot to increase its defence capacity because we are all united in our determination to defend every inch of NATO territory. NATO is and will remain the fundamental guarantor of collective security. We will keep a large part of our German army reliably ready for the defence of the Alliance."
