Wild Hummingbirds Return After Losing Their Nesting Tree
Hummingbirds are one of the smallest and most beautiful species of birds. Their light and fragile bodies, always amaze us humans with the strength and stamina they possess. During winter months, when food availability can be scarce, hummingbirds are able to slow their metabolism to an incredibly low rate to conserve energy stored in their bodies. Hummingbirds require an incredible amount of energy to flap their wings 50 times or more per second in order to maintain hovering flight. In fact, if a hummingbird were the size of a human, it would consume energy at a rate more than 10 times that of an Olympic marathon runner. They are able to accomplish this by burning only the most recently ingested sugar in their muscles while avoiding the energetic tax of first converting sugar into fat. As we see, they are amazing little creatures. The home at which these beautiful birds were recorded, had a treeing which these little birds had built their nest. During a winter storm in Vancouver B.C , the tree took a beating and had several large branches break. With the dangerous state that the neighbours tree was in, which also was the nesting tree of these little Anna’s Hummingbirds, the tree was in desperate need of being removed. Bren the videographer was concerned that the hummingbirds had been killed by the collapsing branches. The hummingbirds had not been seen around in the spring of 2023 although Brent continued to fill and clean his feeder. After 6 months, since the tree had been removed, the videographer is finally seeing the return of two hummingbirds that once use to frequent his feeder daily. With continued filling, cleaning and refilling the feeder since March, the gorgeous little birds are finally back and thriving. The two Anna’s Hummingbirds were very cautious when Brent secured his video camera near the feeder, but after approximately one hour they were comfortable enough to swoop in and enjoy a sugary meal. “Classy, urbane, and stylish with the heart of a tiger” best describes these little hummingbirds known as Anna’s Hummingbird. With their iridescent emerald feathers and sparkling rose-pink throats, Anna’s Hummingbird are extremely beautiful but they also have a fierce attitude and defend their territory with tenacity. Brent the videographer mentioned “It is great and exciting to once again be able to sit on my back patio and be able to watch , and hear, as the hummingbirds come in for a meal.”
