Tech Titans to live forever turn to next-gen anti-aging pills. Startup NewLimit tries epigenetics
Here’s how tech titans are now on a quest to unlock the secret to living forever. Welcome to the fascinating realm of anti-aging research.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend among tech executives to turn to prescription pills, such as metformin and rapamycin, as part of their anti-aging routines. These drugs are known for their potential to slow down the aging process by targeting and taming "zombie cells," a term given to senescent cells that no longer multiply but remain active in the body. By taking these pills, biohackers and industry leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hope to extend their lifespans and enhance their overall health.
Metformin, a diabetes drug, and rapamycin, an immunosuppressant, fall under a class of drugs called "senomorphics." They have shown promise in reducing the secretions of zombie cells and combating age-related diseases. These cells, although not inherently harmful, can contribute to a range of conditions such as heart disease, Alzheimer's, arthritis, and lung and kidney issues when they accumulate in the body over time.
Excitingly, researchers are also investigating new drugs and drug combinations, known as "senolytics," that have the potential to clear zombie cells from the body completely. For example, Dr. James Kirkland at the Mayo Clinic has tested a cancer drug called dasatinib along with a plant compound called quercetin in mice and small-scale human trials. The results have shown extended lifespan in mice and improved mobility in individuals with age-related lung diseases. However, more extensive testing is required to ensure the safety and efficacy of these interventions.
In addition to pharmacological interventions, experts emphasize the importance of lifestyle factors like exercise and diet in reducing the burden of senescent cells. Although these interventions can be effective, it can be challenging to implement them consistently in everyday life.
The pursuit of anti-aging research is not limited to individuals but also extends to visionary entrepreneurs. NewLimit, a San Francisco-based company co-founded by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, aims to extend the number of healthy years individuals live by epigenetically reprogramming cells. By understanding the epigenetic drivers of aging and developing products that can regenerate tissues, NewLimit seeks to improve specific patient populations' overall health and well-being. The company has recently raised $40 million in Series A funding, highlighting the growing interest and investment in the field.
