A Bittersweet Kidding Season

Everything you do comes with an opportunity to learn and this kidding season was certainly no exception. This year was full of ups and down, trials, hardships, and of course celebration of things that go right.

This year we lost several goat kids. In addition to that one of our does never settled, and another one miscarried a couple of months into her pregnancy. Death is part of life on a homestead but unfortunately it never gets any easier. We do our best to learn from mistakes we’ve made in the past and I think we can confidently say we’re getting better as we go along. Having experienced friends in this field (and every field, really) is a huge benefit and we’re thankful to have several people we can turn to when we have questions.

Of course for all the things that went wrong there was plenty that went right, as well. We had several healthy kids born on the farm including an adorable Nubian doeling. We purchased her mom, Belle, as a bred doe from a local farm and she has quickly become one of Megan’s favorite milkers. In fact, that Nubian udder has Megan rethinking her entire dairy goat plan.
