Born on June 19, 1930, to Hugh Hunt and Gladys Bell (Smith) Armstrong, Dean spent his formative years in Steele and at Sentinel Butte. Following in his father's footsteps, who was also a cowboy and the producer of the Diamond Bar Wild West Show that traveled across the United States, Dean embarked on his own rodeo career. Alongside five other talented North Dakota cowboys, known as the 'Six Pack,' Dean competed in rough stock and bulldogging events, earning him all-around honors and substantial prize money.

Recognizing the remarkable achievements of young rodeo athletes, the Dakota Cowboy Student Rodeo Athlete of the Week features 10-year-old Chaz Kurle from Wilton Public School. Displaying exceptional talent and dedication, Chaz won his first saddle at the age of 6 and has since accumulated over 60 buckles in various competitions.
