Start PC Engine & TurboGrafx 16 Collecting With These 3 Great Games!

One of the systems that I did not have back in the day but have absolutely fallen in love with has been the TurboGrafx 16 or the PC Engine or the Core Grafx. Same system, different countries. While promising 16-bit graphics, it never really delivered that but it did provide some amazing games with terrific gameplay. Analogue has just recently opened up pre-orders for their TurboDuo clone system, and in 2022 Hyperkin announced their upcoming RetroN GX which will allow you to play TurboGrafx 16 games as well on a clone system. So if you've never played the TurboGrafx 16 and wanted to know where to start, what are three great games I would recommend?

Number 3
Pacland
One of the things I love about Pacland is that it is based not only on the arcade game but on the Saturday morning cartoon as well. I remember getting up in my footie pajamas and turning on WISN Channel 12 in Milwaukee on Saturday mornings to see Pacland. The TurboGrafx 16 version of the game uses the same music and very similar sprite work, and it's just an absolute joy to play. It's a departure from a traditional Pac-Man game, but that doesn't mean it's any less fun.

Number 2
Bonk's Adventure
The Bonk series of games was meant to be the TurboGrafx 16 mascot, but the weird thing was you could actually play these games on Nintendo systems! That's right, the Famicom and NES both have versions of Bonk. That doesn't mean that this isn't a great game, quite the contrary. It is colorful, fun to play, challenging, and if you finish one there are always two others to go and play as well. Bonk's Adventure is one of my favorite games, not just on the TurboGrafx 16 but on any platform.

Number 1
Fantasy Zone
It's weird to think about it, but Sega saw the TurboGrafx and PC Engine as such a competitor to their own hardware that they released one of their top-tier games on it. Fantasy Zone is a classic arcade-style shooter, but it has that cute 'em up sort of feel. It is bright, colorful, great music, everything the system is all about. I cannot recommend Fantasy Zone, or these other two games, highly enough.

Have you ever owned a PC Engine, TurboGrafx 16, or Core Grafx? Have you ever wanted one? Are you tempted to pre-order one of the new clone systems that are coming? Sure your thoughts in the comments below!
