Fabrizio Carboni, Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross, urged world leaders and donors of any kind to help the Syrian people as their humanitarian needs face an unprecedented funding crisis. Syria’s needs have been exacerbated by an economic crisis, earthquake destruction, and over a decade of brutal war; the ICRC said nearly 90% of the country lives below the poverty line. “It’s dire, it’s worrying, and in the short term, if there is no injection of funds, I see a very difficult future for the Syrian population,” said Carboni.
