How Worried Should Trump Be Right Now?
Yesterday we saw the formal arraignment of former President Donald Trump – the first time in history that a former President has been arraigned and charged in federal court.
The indictment against President Trump includes 37 charges, 31 of which involve the retention of documents, and the other 6 involve alleged obstruction and conspiracy to move or conceal the documents. The issue here is while many of these charges seem easily refutable, if President Trump were to be convicted on just one or two, he could be slapped with what essentially amounts to a life sentence. Is President Biden really going to look the other way as his number one political opponent is locked behind bars for life? That’s third-world politics. That’s not how it works in a constitutional republic.
And yet this certainly feels more like a political indictment than it does criminal. The Left wants Trump out of the picture by any means necessary. This is just their latest salvo – but this time, the former President will need to defend himself.
President Trump held a press conference after the arraignment, defending himself and decrying the indictment to his supporters, calling the proceedings “the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country.”
During his address, President Trump mentioned how Special Counsel Jack Smith has a history of taking down high-profile political figures. Smith indicted former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, who was then unjustly convicted of fraud and accepting illegal gifts, a conviction that ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, helped overturn at the Supreme Court in a stunning rebuke. Nonetheless, Gov. McDonnell’s life and political career were ruined. Some might argue Smith’s mission was accomplished. And now he’s gunning for the former – and potentially next – President of the United States.
Now the case will move toward a trial, but that could take a year or more. Prosecutors will begin to hand over evidence to Trump’s legal team as they prepare their defense. Will this get to trial? Will Trump’s attorneys try to have the case thrown out? Will President Trump take a plea deal in order for the country to move forward? Anything’s possible, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s probable.
Today’s full Sekulow broadcast includes more discussion of yesterday’s historic, albeit sad, arraignment of President Trump and the reaction from the country, as well as what it means as we move forward into campaign season for the 2024 election.
