Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is one of those hit and miss movies. It’ll get a big laugh, and then a flatline. It’ll get really creative and interesting, and then drop off for a few scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I like this movie in a guilty pleasure sort of way, but I’ll always save praise for the stuff that’ll last, and this movie simply won’t.

Why? Because it suffers from the general nihilistic malaise that plagues today’s movies that don’t have the balls, nor the talent, to inject any meaning. The obvious withholding of romance, for example. Are we all so jaded that Hollywood is scared to show two people getting together in a classically romantic way? There are multiple couples in this movie and nobody gets together. Only one of them “verbally consents” to get together at a later time. It’s like watching “Friendzone: the movie.”

I get that it’s a fantasy, but that’s all the more reason to inject a little humanity, so that it’s not JUST a bunch of weirdos throwing magic around. We need a little humanity in our stories because, ummm, we’re human!!
