Let’s talk about Investing in GoPro Stock. Is it a good share to buy in 2018 or should we look elsewhere?

GoPro was founded by Nick Woodman in 2002. GoPro makes video cameras that are completely waterproof and shockproof that record ‘high quality’ video’s. These devices are very small and are mainly used for outdoor activities. Now am I a fan of GoPro stock? No, and here’s why...

- They’ve showing earnings that have been decreasing over the past couple of years. Their 2016 income statement showed negative earnings of 419 million dollars.
- They’ve also shown some strong negative signals in the company including cutting employees, poor investment choices, and management dropping out.
- GoPro is trading for an extremely low price at the moment when we compare it to historical figures. So maybe if they find a way to change their bottom line we could see and increase in price. But for me, I have no added insight to say that they’re going to turn the company around so I will not be investing in them.
- I do think earnings will slowly increase as there’s only a certain amount of time you can have negative earnings. They’ve been trying to show positive earnings through different ways including cutting employees. But remember this does not create sustainable long-term high earnings.
- It’s just not a company that I can say with confidence will do well in the future.
GoPro has reportedly been looking to sell itself to a larger company. GoPro’s founder Nick Woodman has said that the he would consider being bought out by a larger company as it might help with scaling up the business. Or rescaling up the business as I would put it.

All in all there could be a number of reasons behind GoPro’s decrease in earnings over the years. Maybe more people are content with using their smartphones for recording the travel and adventure experiences, or maybe increased competition delivering lower prices are the main reason why GoPro’s sales have tumbled. But either way the earnings have tumbled over the past couple of years and it’s just not a stock I can accurately put a value on.
