LEARNING TO BE SILENT

The Scriptures tell us that the prophets and the old testament are for our learning and edification. The experiences that the children of Israel went through teach us of principles and patterns of gods nature. In other words, that's the way it is in life.
Out of the old testament archives comes an exciting yet mysterious experience that the children of Israel endured as they were heading toward the promised land victory.
It's called the silent march.
From this pattern we see and scriptures in the New Testament, we understand what the Holy Spirit teaches us as we read the story.
The children of Israel came to Jericho, a fortified city filled with bad guys. They had a challenge, and God gave Joshua the key.
Tell the people to march around the walls of Jericho once a day for six days. And on the seventh day, march around seven times.
Now, here's the challenge. Keep your mouth shut. Only utter a sound once I tell you to shout. Is this what is meant by the term "silence is Golden."
Why would God command them to be silent while they were marching around the walls of Jericho?
First of all, it was a challenge to obey the authority God had put over them. They were confirming their trust in the lord and that he was speaking through Joshua.
Secondly, and equally important, was that the children of Israel had a propensity for complaining and murmuring about their leaders and God himself. So a new rule of life is created; "if you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all."
However, there is a third principal at work here.
After you've done all to stand, stand there for having your loins girt about with truth. We find that a new testament quotation of an old testament principle.
After the children of Israel had committed to obeying their leader, Joshua, and the word of God that he received, they saved their anointing and their voice for the shout at victory.
Remember, it's better to have faith in silence them to lose your victory through a bad confession.
