The lions of Africa, is one of the most emblematic animals of the continent. Known for their powerful physiques and impressive hunting skills, these big cats are feared by many as the enemies of the African jungle. But there is another animal that lives next to lions - the hyena. These scavengers are famous for their vicious eating habits and have a reputation as ferocious predators. Despite their frightening reputation, hyenas share the same space as lions, and both have a habit of stealing each other's game. Therefore, many conflicts happen between the Hyenas and the Lions. In encounters like these, lions have the advantage of size and strength, but when a lion is isolated from the pride, hyenas have a chance to kill a lion. As shown in this video, where an isolated lioness was chased by a group of hyenas, cornered, the lioness had to run for her life, with the hyenas biting her hind legs. We could see that she was in danger. The hyenas then surrounded her, and you could almost see the acceptance of defeat in their eyes. But a pride of lions appears and saves the lioness and the only thing the hyenas have to do is run. Hyena-lion fights sometimes last for days. During one of them, in 1999, thirty-five hyenas and six lions died during a two-week encounter in the Ethiopian desert. Each night the animals attacked each other in a slimy frenzy, before retreating to their dens during the day to avoid the scorching sun. It was like World War I trench warfare with teeth and claws.
