Arriving at Operation Hard Yakka was a turning point in Ricky - J's life. He was headed down a dangerous path of crime, drugs and gangs and even though he had a few unsuccessful attempts to leave he settled into a place with loving boundaries and mutual respect.
Years later he has returned to Operation Hard Yakka but this time is on the other side of the fence. He is now supporting other young mem to find their purpose and identity.
He credits the success of his life to the founder Bob. Bob has been running Operation Hard Yakka for 16 years. He has had over 500 young mem attend the program and has a success rate of 97%. Success is determined by having the young men return to school or work, not getting in trouble with the law and respecting family members.
I met Bob at a Hervey Bay 'Stop Crime' Meeting with Malcolm Roberts. At this meeting we heard the distressing story of a young women killed a few weeks ago by a 13 year old in a stolen car. This event impacted so many people in the community, carers, the car owner, the grandmother of children involved, the children and extended family of the deceased, the school, the police and the hospital staff. Bob is offering one solution to a very complex problem. He runs a gel ball business to help fund it. With more funding he can provide more programs.
