Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Saturday, touching down for top-level talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trudeau's visit comes as Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive officially begins. Winds in the area of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., have shifted, giving evacuated residents a bit of relief as a wildfire rages kilometres from their homes. Firefighters have been dousing houses with water to protect them from flames if the worst-case scenario were to occur. Rumina Daya reports.

To the political fallout in Ottawa, after David Johnston’s bombshell announcement Friday that he would resign as the special rapporteur investigating foreign interference in Canadian elections. Johnston had faced calls for him to resign over his ties to the prime minister and growing demand for a public inquiry. But his departure hasn’t brought the issue any closer to a solution.
