ഹൈന്ദവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ശീവേലിവിഗ്രഹം എന്ന വിഗ്രഹത്തെ വാദ്യമേളങ്ങളുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ ശ്രീകോവിലിനു പുറത്തേക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രാചാരമാണ് ശ്രീവേലി. തന്റെ ഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾക്ക് നിവേദ്യം നൽകുന്നത് ഭഗവാൻ നേരിൽ കാണുകയാണ് എന്നതാണ്‌ ശീവേലിയുടെ സങ്കല്പം. അവർക്ക് നൽകുന്ന ബലിയാണ് ശ്രീബലി അഥവാ ശ്രീവേലി. ദ്വാരപാലകരും, അഷ്ടദിക്പാലകരും, സപ്തമാതൃക്കളും, ഭൂതഗണങ്ങളും, ക്ഷേത്രപാലകനും ഈ സമയത്ത് തങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള നിവേദ്യം സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഹവിസ്സും ജലഗന്ധ പുഷ്പാദികളുമായി മേൽശാന്തിയും തലയിൽ ഭഗവത് വിഗ്രഹവുമായി കീഴ്ശാന്തിയുമാണ് ശീവേലിക്ക് എഴുന്നള്ലിക്കുന്നത്. നാലമ്പലത്തിനുള്ളിൽ അഷ്ടദിക്പാലകർക്കും, സപ്തമാതൃക്കൾക്കും, പുറത്ത് ഭൂതഗണങ്ങളെ പ്രതിനീധീകരിക്കുന്ന ബലിക്കല്ലുകളിന്മേലും ബലി തൂവും. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നാലമ്പലത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തും വാദ്യഘോഷങ്ങളുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ ശ്രീബലിയുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഈ സമയം ക്ഷേത്രേശനെ പ്രദക്ഷിണമായി നീക്കുന്നു. മൂന്ന് പ്രദക്ഷിണശേഷം ശീവേലി വിഗ്രഹവുമായി കീഴ്ശാന്തി ശ്രീലകത്തേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുപോകുന്നു.

A 28-day festival, in the heart of a dense forest and in front of a roaring river, is an experience only God’s Own Country can provide. The hills of Kannur play host to the Kottiyoor Vysakha Mahotsavam, a festival hosted by two temples, Akkara Kottiyoor, and Ikkara Kottiyoor. Situated on the banks of the mighty River Baveli, it is among the most beloved festivals of Northern Kerala.

The venue is the Akkara Kottiyoor Temple which only opens during festival days annually (Chothi asterism of the Malayalam month of Edavam to the Chithira asterism of the Malayalam month of Midhunam). The dates normally fall between May-June. The twenty eight day festival commences with the Neyyattam ritual on the Swati Day in Edavam and concludes with the Thrikkalashaattu.

The Vaisakha Maholsavam celebrations begin with the ritual of bringing a sword from Muthirerikavu from Wayanad. On the following day, on Visakham star Bhandaram Ezhunnallath ritual is held. Gold, Silver vessels, heavenly ornaments etc are brought from nearby Manathana village to Kottiyoor.

An important ritual during the festival is the 'Elaneer Vayppu' or submitting tender coconuts before the swayambhu Shiva linga. On this special day, thousands of tender coconuts carried from different parts of Malabar by the devotees are submitted. The following day, the main priest of the temple, pours the collected coconut water on to the idol which is known as 'Elaneeraattam'.

Rohini Aaradhana is a very important ritual which is not seen in any other temple. The priest embraces the swayambhu Shiva linga as part of the ritual. The belief behind this ritual is that Brahma himself worships Lord Shiva to pacify for the loss of Sati.

As a part of the festival, a procession (Ezhunnallippu) is held with two elephants carrying the idols of Lord Shiva and Parvathi. After the procession, the elephants are fed well (Aanayootu) and given a formal farewell.
