Was slavery permitted in the Christian era?

After serving as the world's primary source of labour for thousands of years, slavery has now been despised and demonized, and all laws legalizing the practice have been repealed.

However, the Bible never condemned the practice, and it did have laws regulating the treatment of slaves. Even when Paul wanted Philemon to release his slave, he didn't tell him that what he was doing was wrong.

Why does society condemn slavery but not the Bible? Did God view slavery negatively, but he allowed it due to human frailty, as he did for war? Was slavery perfectly okay in the first place?

Hundreds of years after the abolition movement began, let's examine the Bible's view of a once widespread system of labour.
