The first-ever submission successfully executed in the UFC
The UFC and submissions go hand in hand. In fact, UFC 1, which many expected to be a slugfest, actually turned out to be a showcase of how cool and entertaining submission moves can be. The first two fights of UFC 1 were settled with punches and kicks but when Jiu-Jitsu ace Royce Gracie stepped into the octagon to face boxer Art Jimmerson for the third fight of the night, the fight was only going to go one way. It took Gracie less than two minutes to take the fight to the ground. From there it was just a matter of when Gracie would submit Jimmerson, who to his credit kept fighting forcing Gracie to go for the rather unconventional smother choke. This marked the first time a submission move would be used to win a fight in the UFC but left some spectators trying their best to hide their confusion as to why the fight had ended.
