Dealey Plaza will forever be important as the location of the murder of an American president-- John F. Kennedy. While there is fervent debate and passionate disagreement about the details of the assassination, what all reasonable people can agree on is the importance of preserving primary source data we all use to form our opinions.

On October 22, 2022, The Dallas Morning news published the results of a solicitation for architectural "reinventings" of Dealey Plaza. While the plans are not approved yet, there is much pressure on the city of Dallas to accept some sort of overhaul of the space. If Dealey Plaza is "reinvented," the character, dimension and look of space will be drastically changed from the day of the assassination. Though the space has changed some with the sands of time, there has been no change so altering as to change the imagination of the public and thwart future research attempts.

The best way-- with the technology with have today-- to preserve Dealey Plaza without need of permit is to do what's called a Matterport 3D tour. I was shocked to find that no one had done this for a historic place like Dealey Plaza! Using the Matterport Pro3, which uses a combination of LiDAR and a camera, we can obtain a 3D model/ traversal tour with a dimensional accuracy of +/- 20mm at 10m from each scan. This allows the resulting data to be used for physics simulations, 3D animations, 3D measurements, interactive web-hosted tours and more. I plan to take a Pro3 to Dealey Plaza (and other sites if time permits) to do an extraordinarily detailed scan of the entire plaza. Afterwards, I will release the resulting files for anyone to use for free.
