Radio producer and political analyst, Frank Emspak and Gilbert Doctorow, Independent International Affairs Analyst discuss with Spotlight the recent, June 1 - 2, 2023 meeting in South Africa of Foreign Ministers from the BRICS country members. It was in preparation for the August 2023 BRICS Summit. Their discussion touches on:

1. BRICS as the world moves towards multipolarism
2. De-dollarization and US hegemony
3. BRICS currency and bank, New Development Bank (NDB)
4. BRICS as a parallel institution versus a replacement, alternative

South Africa is the "S" in BRICS. South Africa has recently come under pressure from the United States regarding the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant for President Putin. This has led to questioning whether South Africa will carry out the arrest warrant; whether SA should host the 2023 BRICS Summit and why the ICC specifically targets African nations? Most reports are that South Africa is refusing to carry out the ICC arrest warrant during the upcoming August 2023 BRICS Summit. It has issued diplomatic immunity to all leaders attending both the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting and the August Summit. The US is punishing and trying to intimidate countries like South Africa who have not joined in its sanctions against The Russian Federation.

In March 2023, the ICC accused President Putin of responsibility for the war crime of deporting Ukrainian children - at least hundreds, possibly more - to Russia. Children were evacuated in response to Ukraine's increased attacks in February 2022 against the Donetsk and Luhansk. These attacks continue. There was a mass exodus of people and families from the two days prior to the beginning of the Special Military Operation. Recently children in the Belgorod area were also evacuated in response to attacks from Kiev and its military. The International Criminal Court considers such measures to protect children as a war crime.

During their meeting, the Foreign Ministers expressed their full support to South Africa's BRICS Chairship in 2023 under the theme “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism”.
