World's Largest Rail Tank Car - G.A.T.X. #96500 Whale Belly, National Museum of Transportation

While visiting the National Museum of Transporation in St. Louis, Missouri, we check out the World's Largest Rail Tank Car, the General American Transportation Corporation's #96500, nicknamed the "Whale Belly". This car was designed to hold over 60,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia and other liquids. It was actually used in service, but was the only car of its kind and was retired after only a few uses.

I enjoy roadside attractions, Americana, historical sites, theme parks, and quirky places of interest. Although I tend to focus on travel, history, literature, theatre, and film, my interests are vast. I particularly enjoy visiting the weird and unusual; the places and things sometimes overlooked. There are stories and history all around us. It is my goal to unlock these stories and share them with the world.
