Old Man reacts to Captain Beefheart's "Grow fins" (1972)

This song was on the Captain's attempt to go more commercial with his 1972 album The Spotlight Kid. He had great artistic success with the 1969 album Trout Mask Replica, considered one of the greatest albums of all time, but he made little or no money for his efforts.

This very bluesy number also features Don on the harmonica, along with the usual Magic Band accompaniment. For the original album cut see here:

In my mind this is the Captain's 4th official studio album. I start counting with "Safe as milk" in 1967", followed by his masterpiece "Trout Mask Replica" in 1969. "Lick my decals off ," came next in 1970 followed by "Spotlight Kid" on 1970.

I realize that he had two other albums that came out before Spotlight, but I am not counting them as official. The 1971 album "Mirror Man," while interesting, can be skipped over as it mainly consists of unfinished songs from an abandoned project in 1967 released by Blue Thumb records after the Captain had obtained some notoriety.

The 1968 album "Strictly Personal" came from the same sessions but was marred in production by the addition of a number of special effects which were not authorized by the Captain.
