Varying paint weights is key to many acrylic pour techniques

One of the most common questions I get is how to create cells with my acrylic pour. Understand paint densities, specific gravity, and the weight of each paint can make controlling the effects and your acrylic pour so much easier.

The weight of paints in an acrylic pour determines which paints rise and which paints sinks when stacked on top of each other. Cells are formed when heaver paint drops through lighter paint or vice versa and small pieces of each color of paint that drop passes through accumulate into "cells".

This celling effect can be amplified by using a very "light" additive like silicone which will travel up through the paint and cause cells.

Additionally, using a pouring medium like floetrol that has a tendency to make cells by itself will help cause this effect to happen on a larger scale.
