Today I had an enriching chat with an insightful guest on my podcast – meet Holly, an affirmation enthusiast and advocate of personal mantras. In this episode, we delved deep into the realm of affirmations, mantras, and the significance they hold in reshaping our lives. So let's take a journey together!
Holly began by defining what she believes a mantra or affirmation is. In her words, "It's any statement or word that can create a positive emotional reaction within ourselves." She is a proponent of personal affirmations that can shift with our changing circumstances. However, Holly emphasized that for these affirmations to be truly impactful, they need to be personal and resonate with us.
The concept resonated with me because I once found myself in a challenging phase of emotional upheaval. One day, during a particularly difficult time, I took a pause to consider who I wanted to be. I envisioned a future version of myself and then articulated five simple affirmations about this future self. Over time, these affirmations became integral to my daily life, helping me build a better version of myself every day. I call them my WHY-firmations, personal affirmations that tie into my “why”.
Holly commended this approach as scientifically backed. She cited a concept known as the Best Possible Self (BPS), supported by extensive research. This exercise entails imagining and writing about your best possible version in the future and reflecting on it regularly. Doing this consistently, Holly explained, helps to retrain our brains to think more optimistically.
One of the benefits of affirmations is that they enable us to transition from merely reacting to life to actively living it. Writing my affirmations daily, I found myself gradually aligning my actions with my future vision, making me feel more proactive.
Holly built upon this by introducing the idea of neuroplasticity – the capability of our brains to reshape and retrain themselves. By using affirmations and other similar exercises, we can start to create new neural pathways, moving away from entrenched negative thought patterns.
Holly used the analogy of skiing on a slope to explain this concept.
Imagine going down a familiar path each time, so much so that your skis automatically follow the entrenched tracks. However, by using tools like affirmations, we can start creating new tracks, gradually retraining our brain to default to a new, more positive way of thinking.
Not every day is a cakewalk, of course, and there are days when maintaining our affirmations feels like a struggle. But even on such days, aligning with just one small aspect of our future vision can go a long way.
We also touched upon the influence of our environment on our mindset and how it can impact our overall well-being. This includes our immediate surroundings, the weather, cleanliness, organization, and even the clothes we wear. Recognizing the power of these environmental influences can be crucial in our journey toward a better self.
In closing, we discussed the challenge of overcoming years of conditioning that has taught us to be more and do more. However, Holly emphasized that true happiness comes from within, and it is possible to unlearn old habits and retrain our minds to embrace a more optimistic outlook.
Remember, transforming your life with affirmations takes time, patience, and consistency. But, with each day that you take a step towards aligning with your future self, you're carving out a path toward a more fulfilling life.
