At a news conference on Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provides an update on the federal response to the ongoing wildfires burning in several provinces across the country.
He is joined by federal ministers Bill Blair (emergency preparedness), Jonathan Wilkinson (natural resources), Karina Gould (families, children and social development), Sean Fraser (immigration), Steven Guilbeault (environment and climate change), and Dan Vandal (Prairies Economic Development Canada). As of June 4, 249 of 413 active wildfires are still deemed out-of-control. Nine provinces and territories are currently battling wildfires as the country deals with an unprecedented amount of fire activity this early in the season. Responding to questions from reporters, the prime minister comments on Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's threats to block passage of the federal budget bill before House summer recess if his party’s fiscal demands are not met.
