Part 4 Jeremiah 5-6: “When Dedication to the Lord is Compromised, Social Justice is not to be found”

Good evening. Great is His faithfulness.

Jeremiah 5 "ALL THE PEOPLE HAVE BROKEN THEIR YOKE"

See v. 1- the word "faithfulness" in Hebrew- אֱמוּנָה ʼĕmûwnâh, em-oo-naw'; or (shortened) אֱמֻנָה ʼĕmunâh; feminine of H529; literally firmness; figuratively security; morally fidelity:—faith(-ful, -ly, -ness, (man)), set office, stability, steady, truly, truth, verily.- according to St. Jerome- "it's referring not to the works of the Jews, in which they exulted according to ceremonies of the law, but to the faith of Christians, through which we are saved by faith." The implication being made here by the Lord is no one is seeking truth and faithfulness so the Lord can be merciful.

See v. 4: "POOR ... DO NOT KNOW THE WAY OF THE LORD: "The poor man is ... he who lacks the great doctrines, as is the view also of the prophet" (BasilG).

See v. 10: "THE FOUNDATIONS" ... BELONG TO THE LORD: Despite her faithfulness, the foundations of the city are established by God.

See v. 13: "OUR PROPHETS WERE AS WIND"- Modern "idiom"- they were full of hot air! St. Jude called them "clouds without water" and "autum trees without fruit" (Jude 12).

see v. 19: "FOREIGN GODS"- both in Greek and Hebrew this word used to describe false gods suggest "strangeness" or an "alien disposition."

see vv. 23-28: - God's people have "INATTENTIVE AND DISOBEDIENT HEART (v. 23), they miss the "GOOD THINGS" (v. 28)- they neglect "THE ORPHAN AND THE WIDOW" (v. 28).

see v. 1: "BETH HACCEREM": according to St. Jerome this was located between Tekoa, - the prophet Amos' birthplace, and Jerusalem.

See v. 5- "DESTROY HER FOUNDATIONS"- this was the ancient way of basically leveling a city, to uproot it's foundations.

See v. 9: See also Lamentations 1:22- https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Lamentations%201%3A22&version=NKJV - to glean a vine is to strip it of all its fruit. That will leave it desolate, the promise of the coming attack on Israel.

See v. 10- compare this Jeremiah 4:4- it's a spiritual act to purify one's heart enter into relationship with God.

See. v. 16: St. Anthanasius compares this passage with John 14:6- "I a, the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

See v. 17: "WATCHMEN" are prophets and all who proclaim the Word of God.

See v. 18: call for holiness is heard outside Israel, which is pointing to the opening of Israel to "THE GENTILES"

See v. 20- Israel's sacrifices were compromised by their idolatry- no difference than today worship is polluted if we do not act on our faith in both Spirit and in truth.

NUMBERS 6:24-26

“The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord [a]lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’
