The amnesty period for the ATF came and went, and pistol braces are not categorized as being short-barrelled rifles in the eyes of the law due to the ATF's rule-making authority.

Several gun rights organizations have been fighting this in court including the Firearm's Policy Coalition, gun owners of America, and Second Amendment Foundation, but the injunction against this ATF overreach and gun control talking point only covers a portion of Americans.

In spite of all this, there were not very many pistols registered as SBR's during this period where the $200 tax stamp cost was waived.
