The issue with nickel reflects a contradiction with the green and environmental promises of electric vehicles. Large amounts of nickel are need to manufacture EVs. This nickle must be mined out of the ground and refined into battery ready substances. This process is environmentally damaging. Huge swaths of rainforests must be cut down to even mind the nickle. Refining is carbon intensive, involving extreme heat and pressure. A waste slurry is produced that is difficult to dispose of.
These issues are playing out across the mineral rich islands of Indonesia which is the world’s largest source of nickel. The country produced half of all nickel used in EV batteries last year versus 5% in 2017. While the nickel deposits are close to the surface, forests must be cleared to access it. One Indonesian mine operated by Australian company, Nickel Industries, stated that clearing the rainforest for the mind resulted in 56,000 tons of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of 12,000 combustion engine cars being driven for an entire year. However, these forests had already been degraded by illegal logging and forestry.
