Cruise lines are overbooking cruises

Don’t be surprised if your cruise trip gets cancelled. Passengers are seeing their trips cancelled or rescheduled because cruise lines are selling more rooms than they physically have available as a buffer for last minute cancellations. This is a common practice in the airline industry. The amount of compensation will vary, but it can ultimately end up costing you big money when you factor in nonrefundable costs like airline tickets or hotel reservations. The WSJ had a story about a woman that stood to lose almost $6,000 when everything was said and done from the cruise cancelling on her.
Cruise occupancy rates are based on the assumption that two people stay in each cabin. When three of four people are in a single cabin, the occupancy rate rises above 100%. Even if you cruise is not cancelled and you get to come aboard, you may have to content with a cramped ship full of people that makes it fusterating to dine, or even get up the stairs to your room.
Overbooking is known to have occurred on bn Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line
The average cost of a five-night cruise for an inside cabin was $743 in June versus $551 last year.
