Birds have specialized cones in their eyes that are sensitive to different wavelengths of light. In addition to the three types of color-sensitive cones found in humans, many birds have a fourth type of cone that is sensitive to ultraviolet light. This allows them to see a range of colors that is invisible to humans, including patterns on flowers and insects that are used for identification and mating.
