Nov 19th, 1863, Gettysburg Address
"“these dead shall not have died in vain"
Those words invoked the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the ideals of democracy. They honored the sacrifice of the dead and urged the living to continue the fight for a new birth of freedom.
What this quote is saying is by continuing the fight the audience would insure the deaths of those who died in battle would not be in vain. If they gave up on the cause of the war, then those who died would have died for a lost cause making their deaths in vain. Because of this, the living must "be dedicated to the great task remaining". 5/31/23 Portage, Wis Old Fort Winnebago Cemetery
