OY BOYS! Off-Your-Back-On-Your-Side. Develop This Habit NOW! Training with Cameron Quinn
OY BOYS. That's my acronym to remind students to Get Off Your Back, On Your Side. Getting stuck on your back in any position is not good. Even rugby players learn very quickly not to get caught under a ruck on your back. This is a drill that helps you to avoid getting stuck and trying to get off your back too late.
The shape was taught to me by Professor Felipe Grez, so for a long time at the dojo we just called that strong side position the "Felipe'. There re a few key points:
1. Get to the side quickly. And the greater the pressure the more you need to angle your body facing downwards.
2. Cock's comb. Just as in stand-up fighting, the frame used to defend the head against strong kicks works here too. Keep the arm relaxed, like sticky hands, as you monitor Uke's attempts to gain head control.
3. Kick-stand the leg. This helps stop Uke from flattening you out again.
4. The top side arm has one priority: prevent Uke's underhook and be ready for your own when the opportunity arises.
Going all the way against strong pressure so that you're basically facing the mat in the Running Man position (taught to me by Priit Mihkelson of Estonia, one of BJJ's modern innovators) is also excellent defence.
