Fetching Water from Dug Well in Tharparkar Using Donkeys
Fetching Water from Dug Well in Tharparkar Using Donkeys >>>>>>
In the arid region of Tharparkar, located in the southeastern part of Pakistan, the scarcity of water poses a significant challenge to the local communities. In this challenging environment, where water sources are limited, people have come up with ingenious methods to fetch water for their daily needs. One such method involves using donkeys to extract water from dug wells.
Dug wells are hand-dug, cylindrical structures made in the ground to access underground water reserves. These wells are often the primary source of water in Tharparkar, providing a lifeline to the communities residing in the region. However, the wells can be quite deep, sometimes reaching depths of more than 100 feet.
To overcome the physical limitations of accessing water from such depths, the locals have harnessed the strength and agility of donkeys. Donkeys, known for their endurance and ability to navigate uneven terrain, play a crucial role in this traditional method of water retrieval.
The process begins with the owner or handler guiding the donkey to the edge of the well, ensuring its safety and proper positioning. A sturdy wooden or metal frame, referred to as a "baga," is attached to the donkey's back using ropes or harnesses. The baga is designed to hold two containers, commonly made from metal or plastic, which are used for water collection.
Once the donkey is ready, the handler slowly lowers the containers into the well using a pulley system. This system typically consists of ropes, a wheel, and a wooden or metal frame that supports the weight of the containers. The handler skillfully manages the ropes to control the descent and ascent of the containers.
As the containers reach the water level, they are filled by immersing them into the well. The handler ensures that the containers are properly submerged to maximize water collection. The donkey patiently waits, displaying its strength and calm demeanor throughout the process.
Once the containers are filled with water, the handler gradually pulls them up using the pulley system. This requires coordination and skill to ensure a smooth and safe ascent. The donkey assists in the process by maintaining balance and providing the necessary pulling force.
Once the containers reach the surface, the water is carefully poured into larger storage vessels or transported to nearby settlements using various methods, such as balancing the containers on the donkey's back or using carts.
Fetching water using donkeys from dug wells in Tharparkar is not only an efficient and effective method but also a testament to the symbiotic relationship between humans and animals. It demonstrates the resourcefulness and resilience of the local communities, who have adapted to the challenging circumstances and utilize traditional knowledge to meet their essential water needs.
This traditional practice not only ensures access to water for drinking, cooking, and other daily activities but also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit and unwavering determination of the people of Tharparkar to overcome the adversities posed by their arid surroundings.
