Acts 22 The Second Missionary Journey Athens, Corinth 17:16-18:5

At Athens we see how Paul gives the gospel to the intellectually elite. He focuses on the nature of God and his message was to repent concerning their concept of God. Some think Paul failed and admitted the failure when he wrote to the Corinthians that he determined to know nothing but Christ and Him crucified. By this they claim Paul was too philosophical at Athens. However, some believed. That is hardly a failure. It is more likely that what Paul meant in 1 Corinthians is that he did not use humanistic methods. Besides, it is clear at Athens that Paul had to start with God to challenge their views of god(s) and then he began to preach Christ and the resurrection, the very things he had been proclaiming in the market place before he stood before the Areopagus. Far from failure, this is an example of how to challenge intellectuals with their idolatry and their need to repent before judgment day.

Then we follow Paul to Corinth, and this is where he meets Aquila and Priscilla, two individuals who also come to Christ and become part of Paul's ministry team. Then Timothy returns from Thessalonica with his report, and this is where we will diverge to 1 Thessalonians, since this is when Paul wrote his first letter to them, and then the second not long after.

See you tonight. Notes attached...

Grace to you,
Jeremy
