And here is a translation of the hymn into modern English:
Now let us praise the guardian of heaven's kingdom,
the power of the Creator and the thought of his mind,
the work of the Father of glory, as he, the eternal Lord,
established the beginning of wonders;
he first created for the children of men
heaven as a roof, the holy Creator.
Then the guardian of mankind,
the eternal Lord, afterwards appointed
the middle earth, the lands, for men.
He, the Lord of all, last made
the light of the sun as a shining gift
for the children of men, and also the hot fire,
and comfort for life.
Caedmon's translation of biblical stories was significant because it helped to disseminate Christian teachings to the Anglo-Saxon people, who were predominantly pagan at the time.
Copies of parts of the Bible in Old English have been found dating as far back as the 8th century.
These early manuscripts were typically translations of individual books of the Bible, rather than complete versions of the text.
One of the earliest known translations of a book of the Bible into Old
English was the Gospel of John, which was translated by the monk and scholar Bede (The 'Venerable' Bede, 672/3 – 26 May 735) in the year 735.
