Canada: MPs comment on wildfires, new immigration plan, cigarette warnings – May 31, 2023

MPs speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as they convene for the daily question period in the House of Commons. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces the federal government will be matching donations made to the Canadian Red Cross for wildfire relief efforts in the Northwest Territories and Nova Scotia.
Sean Fraser, the immigration minister and MP for Central Nova, N.S., comments on the wildfires burning in his province. He and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos also discuss the plan to launch a category-based selection model under the express entry system for newcomers to Canada. The model will create a specific draw for francophone applicants and another for skilled workers in five key sectors.
