Grow Your Own Food! The First Seeds to Sow After The Snow Melts

Grow your own food! What are the first seeds you can plant in the spring here in the northeast? We took a big chance and sowed some seeds outdoors here in New England after tilling the raised beds. The snow is barely melted and we are still a good ways out from our last frost, which averages around May 15th in zone 5a where we are.

With all that's going on in the world right now though, we wanted to get some seeds in the ground as quickly as possible so that we could begin growing our own food. Having your garden producing vegetables is key to being more self reliant, especially if your food forest isn't up and running yet. Planting a garden reminiscent of the victory gardens during WW2 is a great way to get up and going!

With stores not having as many supplies as they have had in the past, it's important to get some seeds into the ground as soon as the soil is workable, and the snow had melted. We chose to sow a mixture of seeds that included radishes, spinach, broccoli, broccoli raab, kale, and escarole. These plants all grow well here in New Hampshire, where we have cold springs and mild summers.
