One of the things that's really annoying about physical media is the fact that you physically have to swap cartridges or disks in and out if you are going ahead and playing different games on a video game system. It's one of the things that I have to say digital does have an advantage over physical gaming, but there's a way to circumvent that, at least on the Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED.

The UInitek Switch Game Card Reader allows you to go ahead and have four games that you can swap between on your Switch, plus storage for four additional games so that way you can easily swap them in and out. The reader features a USB-C port and includes a USB-A to USB-C cable to for power. It also has a fairly thick ribbon cable that goes from the switcher to your cartridge port. Instead of going up and over the switcher I would have preferred if the ribbon cable exited the side of the case closer to the cartridge port. It's not bad, just a bit unsightly. Finally, there's a push button on the left side of the switcher which changes the game and color when pressed. I would like it a bit more if the LED would flash the number of times to respond to the cartridge port in use to help identify the game in use. I think that would be more helpful than the color changes myself.

To attach the switcher to your dock, it just uses a pressure fit to stay in place. On both my original Switch Dock and my Switch OLED dock the fitment was perfect. It slid on and was held securely in place without being difficult to remove if so desired. One thing that would be nice is if there would be a way for the unit to stand on its own behind the Switch to make it more convenient if and when using a 3rd party dock. Perhaps having legs that could swing out and stand behind the dock would be a solution?

Connecting the switcher's cable to the Nintendo Switch's cartridge port was a snap. Simply open the Cartridge Slot, insert the adapter, and you're good to go. Some people may not be thrilled with the looks of having the cartridge flap open constantly, and I get that, but for this level of convenience, it's a necessity.

I grabbed several cartridges and loaded up the Unitek dock with multiple games. One of the things that I was listening to and feeling for was the quality of the pins and if there would be an audible "Crunch" when the cartridges were inserted. There was not, the pins and mechanism operated freely and didn't have a death grip on my cartridges. I was very happy about this. I also loaded up a few games in the storage side of the switcher and wasn't as thrilled with this. The storage cartridges stick out further than the carts in the switcher mechanism. I wish they'd just be flush with each other for a cleaner overall presentation.

Once I had things loaded up I was ready to test. One thing that is a bit of a downside, at least on the Switch OLED Dock, is that you lose a USB port for other accessories if and when you plug this in. I'd like to have another USB-A port on there for convenience. That being said, this thing is magnificent. When I powered my system on, the game in Slot 1 showed up, just as it should. Then with each additional press, the other games popped on and off my menu. Just to see what it would do, I did press the switch cartridge button without closing the game. It gave me an error, the same as if I would have just removed the cartridge from the system without exiting.

Why It RoX:
- Allows you to use 4 cartridges with 1 Switch Console
- Compact
- Storage for 4 additional games
- LED Indicator for which game is in use
- Reasonably priced

What could be improved:
- Better integration with 3rd party docks
- Uses a USB Port, needs a pass-thru USB-A for other accessories
- LED should flash the number of the cartridge port in addition to changing color
- Storage ports stick the cartridges out further

Should you buy one?
This is about as close to a must-have accessory as I have tested out. I put this up there with Fixture Gaming S1 and S2 for my favorite accessories for the Nintendo Switch. While it does have some warts and areas where it could be improved, this is still an amazing device that I absolutely love. It works well, it works with both my Switch and Switch OLED Dock, and saves me from waddling up and down stairs to swap games. I have sent my suggestions to Unitek for some improvements, which I pointed out above, and I am hoping they take them to heart as this is a good accessory which could become truly great.
