Target's hypocrisy is evident when examining its response to perceived threats against employee safety based on political affiliation. The company displayed a double standard in its actions. When it faced backlash from conservative customers over its controversial LGBTQ-themed merchandise during pride month, Target held an emergency meeting to address the situation. They acknowledged the potential impact on their bottom line due to their reliance on red state customers. Target then announced a reduction in Pride displays, specifically in southern states where the backlash was expected to be more severe. They framed this decision as a response to "volatile circumstances and threats impacting our team members' sense of safety and well-being."
However, when actual threats of violence were made by individuals claiming to be frustrated with Target's withdrawal from supporting the LGBTQ community, the company did not take the same level of action. Anonymous emails threatening bomb attacks on multiple Target stores were received, but no explosive devices were found. The threats explicitly criticized Target for catering to "homophobic right-wing redneck bigots" and demanded the reinstatement of LGBTQ merchandise. Despite these threats, Target did not emphasize the safety of its employees or hold emergency meetings. The contrast between Target's response to conservative backlash and the threats from the LGBTQ community reveals their selective concern for employee safety based on political affiliation.
This disparity highlights Target's political motivations and raises questions about the company's genuine commitment to employee safety. It suggests that their previous actions were more about furthering a narrative of right-wing extremism rather than genuinely prioritizing the well-being of their workers. By ignoring threats from the LGBTQ community, Target's hypocrisy becomes apparent, and their credibility in claiming employee safety as a primary concern is undermined.
