La tempesta (internationally released as Tempest) is a 1958 Italian drama film directed by Alberto Lattuada. It is based on A History of Pugachev (1834) and the 1836 novel The Captain's Daughter, both by Alexander Pushkin.

In 18th century Russia, Imperial officer Piotr Grinov is dispatched to a faraway isolated outpost where his loyalties are tested during the Pugachev Rebellion against the Empress Catherine II.

PLOT:
In 18th century Russia, Imperial officer Piotr Grinov is dispatched to a faraway isolated outpost where his loyalties are tested during the Pugachev Rebellion against the Empress Catherine II. Grinov, a privileged soldier in Catherine The Great's Guards of 1770, is sent to a distant post for disciplinary reasons. On he way there, he picks up a half frozen man and revives him. At the new garrison he falls in love with Masha, the Captain's daughter. Against orders he fights a duel with over Masha . The man whose life he saved earlier is Pugachev, who had been uniting the Russian Cossacks in uprisings to over throw Catherine.
