Welcome to 'The Great Awakening' - a show where we speak to people who are answering the modern call to become the most authentic version of themselves. These are people who step into their light so that no darkness can penetrate it; people who know that the disruption we see around us, the dying throes of a poisonous imbalance, presents an opportunity like never before to remember exactly who we are.

Episode 4 features Juhi Sonrexa. Juhi has 15 years’ experience in the effective conceptualisation, design, delivery and assessment of humanitarian and development programming and research. She has worked in program management and as a technical advisor for a number of international development organisations around issues such as gender inequality, disability inclusion and child rights in both conflict-affected and peacetime settings.

She is currently a PhD candidate at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, exploring the translation of post-development principles into practice. Post-development theory is the most excoriating of critiques of modern aid as it involves a fundamental interrogation into the core features of the prevalent development discourse which is Western-centric and enduringly prioritises economic growth, productivism, anthropocentrism, unregulated capitalism, rationalism and individualism in defining societal progress. Across the world this is resulting in the resurfacing of ancient worldviews with current relevance, as well as new frameworks and visions that present systemic alternatives for human and planetary well-being. This includes revisiting ethical values and principles such as solidarity but also autonomy, interconnectedness but also enhanced free will, oneness with nature, simplicity, non-hierarchy, pluriversality, self-determination, self-reliance and peace. It takes the imperative of ‘development pluralism’ seriously, and asks us to consider peripheral, subjugated, sometimes magical (often non-Western) alternatives in order to redefine development, exploring more convivial paths to modernity and rediscovering lost arts of living, and perhaps altogether different ideas of what constitutes ‘a good life’.
