Why are big investors rushing into bonds after a tumultuous year? Benjamin Z Miller Answers
Large asset management groups are increasingly turning to fixed income investments to capitalize on higher yields following a challenging period for bonds in the previous year. The surge in US interest rates over the past 12 months resulted in a decline in bond prices but has now led to yields on Treasury notes reaching levels not seen in the past decade. With the Federal Reserve nearing the end of its tightening cycle, institutional and retail investors are showing interest in both sovereign and corporate bonds.
The attraction to fixed income is driven by the higher expected returns due to the increased yields. Sebastien Page, Chief Investment Officer of T Rowe Price's global multi-asset strategy, stated that bonds have become exciting again, with yields being significantly higher than in previous years. More than $100 billion has flowed into fixed income funds during the first four months of this year, marking a reversal from the outflows experienced in active fixed income strategies the previous year.
