Arm Drags. The First Stand-Up Grappling Technique Everyone Should learn! Training with Cameron Quinn

The arm drag is a very effective skill if you learn it well. It is high percentage, very practical for stand-up fighters from other arts, and easy to learn.

Get the timing right and it is easy. That means drilling the timing until you have it down very effectively. If your opponent ties up a strong collar tie, however, whilst it is not impossible, it can be very difficult. A good collar tie from a good opponent is very tough. I present a couple of ways here to deal with it and transition from the usual 2-on-1 (Russian Tie) to the arm drag.

For karate-ka, the initial arm movement is the Uchi Uke inside block. Then the hand continues in a Tensho movement exactly like the fourth movement out of the Tensho kata. Once the hand is cleared, the second hand comes almose like a second uchi-uke with the other hand to capture the opponent's bicep and drag it through, past your body. Hence the technique being called an "arm drag".

This is absolutely one of the first techniques any stand-up fighter transitioning to Range Four (Gyaku-te, stand-up grapple) should learn. In a future video we'll work on defences.
