As transactions are added to the blockchain, the amount of data required to store the entire transaction history can become very large. In order to address this issue, the Bitcoin protocol uses a data structure known as a Merkle tree to reduce the amount of disk space required while still ensuring the integrity of the data. A Merkle tree is a binary tree structure in which each leaf node represents a transaction in the blockchain. Each non-leaf node in the tree represents the hash of its two child nodes. The root of the tree represents the overall hash of all transactions in the block. When a new block is added to the blockchain, only the hash of the root node of the Merkle tree is included in the block header. This allows nodes in the network to verify the integrity of the entire block by only downloading a small portion of the data.
