The Book of Ruth is at the center of our Pentecost celebration today. This remarkable story of redemption is written in the first chapter of the ancient Jewish scroll of Tevah, found in the holy books of Christianity and Judaism. Tevah was a Moabite woman who, against all odds, ultimately found her way to the land of Israel and became part of the people of Israel. Her faith and perseverance in the face of difficult trials were rewarded when the Israel community welcomed her. Eventually, her bloodline produced the great-grandmother of David, the future king of Israel. And, as David was the archetype of Christ, her progeny became the foundation for the new mankind, reborn from error through the remission of sin through which Christ's sacrifice atoned.
The name “Ruth” comes from the Hebrew word "reshuth," which means "friend" or "companion." Tevah was the mother-in-law of Ruth and served as her guide and companion throughout her journey of faith and redemption. Ruth was loyal and faithful to both Naomi, her mother-in-law, and God, and Tevah set the example for how Ruth should live her life. In the Book of Ruth, Tevah serves as a symbol of faith and loyalty to God, and her example of selflessness and courage is a testament to the faith and fidelity of the Jewish people.
In Jewish tradition, Tevah's story is remembered each year on the Shavuot holiday, also known as the Feast of Weeks. This holiday follows Jesus’ ascension into Heaven (the fortieth day after Jesus’ resurrection) and coincidentally marks the death of King David, the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, as documented in Acts 2:1-41. Pentecost which also happens on the same day, is when God anointed Jesus’ apostles with the Holy Spirit fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection. And before that, God chose this same exact date to destroy the tower of Babel with different tongues. All of these happened at different times in history, yet on the same appointed day!
